The Biggest HVAC Myths—Myth #1: You’ll Get All This for a $49 HVAC Service Call…

In some of my past blogs I’ve put on my “Mythbuster” hat (well, it’s actually a collar) and taken down some of biggest misunderstanding that people have about air conditioning and heating. But there is a swarm of those myths wandering around, so I’ve decided to make this into a series where I tackle the biggest HVAC myths one after the other.

First up is one of those “If It Sounds Too Good to Be True… It Probably Is” stories.

You Get All This for a $49 Service Call!

I’ll bet they offered some steak knives with that, too.

Okay, here’s the truth: when you run across a promise of an extremely inexpensive service call, it’s probably a “bait-and-switch” operation. Many of the HVAC companies that advertise heavily, particularly the ones that offer an entire line of services (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, dog grooming, etc.) are paying their technicians on commission based on the amount they charge. So what the technicians are actually doing is looking for any reason to charge a customer for something. If there isn’t anything wrong with the AC or heater, they’ll find something wrong. It’s like the opposite of a real service call! These technicians are banking on homeowners’ lack of familiarity with their HVAC equipment so they won’t question the necessity of a replacement part, the high cost of a repair, or the requirement for multiple trips.

Oh, and have I mentioned that most of these “technicians” aren’t even licensed? They aren’t.

What Makes MK Russell & Abbott Different

Our company is based on history and trust. We aren’t just HVAC technicians, we’re members of the community, and we’ve become a success because we treat every customer like neighbors (often our literal neighbors!). We’re licensed, bonded, and insured, and our technicians are all drug-free and certified.

Does this cost us a bit more to do business? Yes, it does. But it also means we can deliver better long-term solutions. Getting the job done right is the best value of all!

I’ll be back next week with a myth about regular maintenance.

Stay cool,
