I know the stereotype about cats is that they’re curious. (And, apparently, this curiosity is supposed to lead to serious trouble.) But that underestimates us canines: we’re curious, too! And you humans are fortunate that we can’t speak, otherwise we’d be asking you endless questions—many of them about food, the time of day, and what time of day there will be food.
However, I have a keyboard and my blog, so I’m free to ask all the questions I want. And today I’m going to ask a few questions… actually, I’m going to offer some examples of questions that you should ask! These are questions for your HVAC contractor that will help ensure you receive a great experience whenever a technician comes to your home for a job. Never feel afraid to ask about the work a contractor is doing: if they’re professionals worth hiring, they will be glad to provide in-depth and answers.
“Can I see your license?”
To which the answer should be, “Why, sure!” You should only have a licensed HVAC contractor on the job: this protects and your home, and it means the people you’ve hired have the proper experience. And since you asked, here’s our License#: CMC-C 67815. Some companies will try to pass off their registration card as a state license, which is not the same thing. State registration is easy to obtain. State licenses require testing and financial proof…for the protection of consumers. All state licenses begin with “CMC.” Make sure you look for it.
“Can you give me referrals from satisfied customers?”
An HVAC contractor with a proud history should have no problem providing you referrals from loyal customers who are pleased with their services.
“How long do you estimate the job will take?”
If you’re having a new installation, or a complex repair, check with the technicians to see how long they believe it will take to finish. A quality contractor should manage to complete most jobs in a day, although there’s always a chance for unforeseen problems. If there is any concern about it taking longer, they will tell you.
“How much will it cost?”
Reputable contractors should be able to tell you the cost of a diagnostic charge and accurately estimate a cost of repair on the spot. Find out how you are being charged. Is it a flat rate (for example, a fixed rate for a service call) or a more nebulous “time and material.” It is ok to ask about costs before work is performed.
