Dealing with High Humidity in Spring and Summer

When it comes to staying cool during the heat, we dogs handle things a bit differently than you humans do. Your bodies release heat through perspiration along the pores of your skin, which helps make your body cooler. Dogs are only able to sweat through our paws, which isn’t enough to really cool us down—especially since we have fur coats. To help make up the difference, we pant. Panting lets us circulate air through our bodies, and this helps keep us cool. Something else that helps keep our bodies cooled down is drinking water, so make sure during hot temperatures that you always have ample water available for your dog! Otherwise, your dog will go find a large body of water and just leap into it! And then shake itself out in the middle of the living room.

Sorry, humans, you have to deal with high humidity!

Unfortunately, as humans water can actually be a way to make you feel hotter during warm weather. It’s the moisture in the air—humidity—that causes it. Your body will have a harder time releasing heat through perspiration when there’s a high level of moisture vapor in the air surrounding you, because all that humidity slows down the evaporation of sweat. When humidity climbs over 60%, the temperature will start to feel hotter than it actually is because so much heat stays trapped in your body. This can be pretty miserable if the temperature is above 80°F—and with spring already here, we’re heading for those warm days soon.

But there’s a way around this—a whole-house dehumidifier

I’ve got good news for those of you who can’t pant to cool down! You can have a whole-house dehumidifier installed in your home. This device lowers the moisture level down below 50% (but still higher than 30%) so you’ll feel much cooler in your home on a humid day. Not only will you not feel as hot, you won’t have to run the AC as frequently, which will help save on your bills over summer. There are some other great benefits to using a dehumidifier: it lowers the chance of water damage to your house and helps prevent the growth of various icky things like mold and mildew.

If you’d like a whole-house dehumidifier installed for spring and summer weather, call MK Russell & Abbott. We service Farragut and Maryville, TN.
