Why You Shouldn’t Use Unlicensed HVAC Contractors

When you are looking around for a contractor to install, repair, maintain, or provide other service for your air conditioning or heating system, you’ll have many choices available. It is very important that you only hire HVAC contractors who are licensed with the state. (Look on a contractor’s website: they will have the license number listed along with the contact information.) Although it might seem tempting to go with a non-licensed amateur because you might “save some money,” please resist this urge. You won’t save money—and you might end up with serious problems.

Here are some of the reasons that you should never hire unlicensed HVAC contractors:

  • You have no guarantee that an unlicensed contractor has the skills necessary to get the job done. Licensed contractors in Tennessee must pass exams and submit the results to the state licensing board in order to show they are competent in their field.
  • Unskilled work done on your HVAC system doesn’t just risk a poorly working heater or air conditioner; it could lead to serious safety problems from bad electrical wiring and gas leaks in combustion systems. You aren’t just risking your family’s comfort, you’re risk their health.
  • You don’t really know who you are hiring when you go to someone without a license. To obtain a license, a contractor must pass through a series of background checks. If you let an unlicensed contractor into your home, you may be letting in someone with a criminal background.
  • Unlicensed contractors rarely have Liability and Worker’s Compensation Insurance. Working on HVAC equipment can sometimes lead to injuries, and if anything should go wrong with an uninsured worker, you may end liable as the homeowner. Licensed contractors in Tennessee are required to carry Worker’s Compensation Insurance, so when you go with licensed contractors you are covered in case of accidents.
