When to Repair vs. Replace Your HVAC System

Wrench

At the end of the summer, before fall temperatures arrive, I encourage all my readers to take an assessment of their HVAC systems. This is especially important if you have an older system that you think is coming close to “retirement” age.

I recently examined some of the ways to tell when it’s time to replace your HVAC system, but today I want to go deeper into a few of those reasons.

The Age of Your System

Your HVAC system works hard year after year, and even with regular maintenance, it will reach a point when it needs to be replaced. There’s no definite age when a system must go, but I caution my readers about systems that are older than 15 years. This is the point where repairs become less effective, operating costs rise rapidly, and the system has a higher chance of failing when you need it the most.

Changes in Home Comfort

How well does your older HVAC system handle keeping the home comfortable compared to how it once did? You might find you’re running the system longer than usual, maybe you’re setting the thermostat lower or higher than in previous years, or not all the rooms are at the temperature that you expect. For an older HVAC system, this is often some of the warning signs that it may be time for it to retire.

Reduced Efficiency

If your home comfort is changing, are your utility bills rising? This is another sign of an HVAC system that’s starting to expire from age and general wear and tear. Regular maintenance can help extend the life of your system, but it can’t stop the inevitable. An HVAC system will rapidly lose its efficiency in the last one to two years of its life signaling that it may be time for a replacement.

Increasing Repairs

We are here to help our customers with their HVAC system repair in Knoxville, TN whenever it is needed. However, you don’t want our team over so often that you’ve got extra doggy treats set aside for me! You shouldn’t need to schedule a repair on your system every year, and more than once a year is definitely too much.
