I write more blogs about home safety during the winter than at any other time of the year. There’s a reason for this: winter is when gas furnaces do the most work. Gas furnaces are not automatically dangerous. (Believe me, if they were, we wouldn’t be installing them in homes!) But they do require special precautions during repairs and maintenance to make certain that they continue to operate safely. One of the most important precautions for furnace is ­combustion analysis.

What Combustion Analysis Is… And Why It’s Important

Combustion analysis is an inspection that a professional makes before doing any repairs on a heating system. The analysis checks to see if there are cracks in the heat exchanger that haven’t been detected yet. These cracks can allow for carbon monoxide (CO) to leak out of the furnace and into the airflow heading to the rest of the house. CO is toxic and difficult to detect, so combustion analysis is key to finding out sources of carbon monoxide before it can start creating health hazards in a house.

You must have professionals for combustion analysis. But not all professional heating technicians are equal. Our HVAC repair specialists use advanced digital combustion analysis equipment. Older methods use smoke bombs and scented oils to find where seepage is occurring in a heat exchanger. Digital devices offer more information about heat exchanger cracks than the older methods, and more important, digital devices are also much more accurate.
