Voting: It’s Vital in More Ways Than You May Think

A few years ago I recall napping near the television set and catching a bit of a stand-up act. The comedian was joking about voting… particularly how proud he was that he didn’t vote. This bothered me, and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t actually have the right to cast a ballot. (Pet enfranchisement hasn’t happened yet, but we’re working on it. “Paws to Vote” is my suggestion for our slogan.) Voting is one of the most important tasks we have as citizens: exercising this is a right, but it should also be a joy. And right now, the day before a general election, is the time to remind everyone about this important duty to your local community, your city, your county, your state, and your country.

We’re in This Together – Voting Is How We Support a Representative Democracy

I can’t stress this enough: Your vote counts. Never allow anyone to tell you different. Never believe that your vote is wasted, or that it won’t make a difference. When a whole community turns out to vote, that draws the attention of elected officials in the future. Voting has a powerful effect on public policy and government. Voting means you’ll be heard—even if the candidates or measures you vote for do not win.

Voting Benefits the Community in Even More Ways

Studies have shown that people who vote are more engaged in other activities like volunteering and contacting elected officials. They are more informed about local affairs and contribute to the betterment of the community. A community that votes is a community with greater trust among its members. These are things that are important to us at MK Russell & Abbott, and that’s why we vote and encourage everyone else to as well. This isn’t a partisan issue—I wouldn’t dream of telling you who or what to vote for. I’m asking you to do your part and cast your ballot.
