Have you ever heard this saying before? “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of a low price is forgotten.” That was written by none other than Benjamin Franklin, quite a wise man. He listed “an old dog” as one of the most faithful of friends, so I’m bound to trust his word on most things. And when he’s talking about poor quality from poor price, I understand exactly what he means—because everyone here at Russell & Abbott knows how much a cheap HVAC service can end up costing someone. It’s not just about feeling bitter. It’s about feeling too hot or too cold because you got low-quality AC service.

Short-Cycling: Why It Happens to an Air Conditioner

I have a nice pattern for my life. It’s a bit mellower than for humans, but it keeps me busy. I nap on the couch when the sunlight hits it, I go on regular walks, I have my dinner, and I’ve got my regular blogging duties.

I bring this up because I want to talk to you about what happens when a routine gets interrupted. Not your routine. Your air conditioner’s routine. During the summer, when you have the AC running, it should work in familiar patterns: turning on, running for a stretch, then turning off for another stretch before starting up again. If you keep the thermostat setting steady during the day (which I recommend), these on-and-off patterns should stay about the same. This is called the cycle of the air conditioner.

But when you notice the AC is starting and stopping far more often than normal, you may have a problem called short-cycling. Sorry to say, but this isn’t good!

Please Don’t Put Off Late Season AC Repairs for Next Year!

This is an important reminder I bring up this time of year because staying on top of repairs for an air conditioning system makes a huge difference for the future of your cooling as well as your budget.

I’ll start with the best kind of analogy I know—a pet analogy! Let’s say you have a loveable pet dog (if you don’t, please look into adopting one!). One day you notice your happy pooch is acting sluggish, or not eating as much, or anything else that seems out of the ordinary. You can choose to wait and just hope the problem goes away. Or you can schedule an appointment with your trusted vet. Which is the better option? The second one, obviously! Waiting on an illness is never a good idea.

I know that you don’t love your air conditioning the same way you love your pets. But you do love what an air conditioner does for you in the summer, and you probably also love having lower utility bills each month and not having to spend money where it’s unnecessary. Because of all this, please always move fast to have air conditioning repair in Loudon, TN done, even if fall weather is right around the corner.

August is “late summer,” but it never seems like that to me. As an HVAC blogging dog, I know that the “serious summer” is during August and through September because this is when our team here at Russell & Abbott is the busiest fielding those important customer AC repair calls. It’s not just that it’s really hot this time of year. It’s that air conditioners have already done plenty of hard work in the early parts of the summer, so when the heat ramps up in August, they may be too worn down already.

A warranty is a warranty, right? It’s there to protect you if something goes wrong with your equipment from something that wasn’t your fault, like a manufacturing defect. So it’s not much more tricky than that … right?

Ah, my dear readers, it’s never that simple! Not all warranties are the same, and not all warranties are equal. When you’re considering a new air conditioning system installation, I recommend you give the warranty a really close look. Like, do a full bloodhound investigation on it. I’ve got a pretty sharp nose like all dogs, but even I have to admit, those bloodhounds are the best when it comes to finding the best. End of the Dog Days of Summer: Time to Think about Fall Maintenance!

We’re nearing the close of the “Dog Days of Summer.” The moment I started to think about writing my next post, I wondered, “Hey, what does ‘Dog Days of Summer’ even mean?” Most people think it means it’s the time of the year when it grows so hot that dogs lie around lazily panting all the time. However, that didn’t sound right to me—I lay around and pant all year!—so I did some research.

It turns out, I was right. The phrase comes to us from the ancient Greeks. Late July is the period when the constellation group Sirius (The Dog) comes up over the horizon just before dawn. The Greeks referred to these days, usually the hottest of the year, as “dog days” because of Sirius. The phrase made it to English eventually, and people have been making up stories about the meaning ever since.

But the dog days are going to come to an end soon, along with the hot weather, and that means it’s time to start thinking of “The Maintenance Days of Fall!” (There isn’t an HVAC constellation, however, so you’ll just have to go with a normal calendar for this.)

Olive Celebrates Presidents’ Day with Presidential Pets

We’re coming up on the last of the three major special days celebrated in February. We already passed Groundhog Day (as an HVAC dog I’m a bit wary about other mammals claiming they can predict the weather; I say “Be ready for anything!”). This week is Valentine’s Day. Next up is Presidents’ Day, which is a combined celebration of the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. You can read a short history of this holiday, but what I’m really interested in talking about today is Presidential Pets.

Although not every head of our Executive Branch has kept a furry friend in the White House, there have been many animal pals to have taken residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
